    This isn’t so much a reply, but a question I don’t see an answer to nor a place to ask a question. I’ve visited C’s for years, sometimes they help, sometimes they don’t, my question is when my sacrum needs adjusting / is adjusted, it seems counter intuitive to adjust both sides. If it was out of whack on one side and is adjusted, it seems adjusting the other side could be prone to returning it to out of whack on the other side…, consequently though a feel more aligned for a moment, shortly thereafter I feel I need to go back to the C. So why adjust both sides?

      Thank you for your question Patrick. Let me start by saying all of my analagies are for visual understanding not for anatomical accuracy. When doctors treat you we always look at both sides for a comparison usually one side is still good and can give us an idea about how the bad side should be. If one bone in your neck is twisted to the left all of the other bones will seem twisted to the right in comparison. With that example it is obvious which bone is wrong because it is more likely for one to be wrong than six.
      When looking at Sacroiliac (SI) joints they are connected to each other through the sacrum kind of like it is an axle. If one is down then by the connection the other has gone up. We can never really look at the opposite side SI joint for a normal comparison. One side may be forward compared to the other side, but which one is out of place? Did one go back out of place or did the other go forward out of place? Often they are both functioning poorly. The simple solution is to adjust both in an opposite/appropriate direction to bring them both to the center and then re-check to make sure that a proper motion is then seen.
      There have been cases when I have decided, based on findings or treatment results, to only treat one SI joint and not the other, but they are rare cases. Because there are little to no risks when adjusting the normal side and some known benefits it is usually acceptable to adjust both. If you feel that you would gain more by only adjusting one side, and your chiropractor is confident that he knows which side it is then discuss that with him and he may decide that you are one of those rare exceptions.
      What is more likely the problem is that you have a lifestyle issue that needs addressing. Perhaps your posture, or perhaps a muscle imbalance or a short leg or something that continues to cause the sacral dysfunction to return so quickly. I would recommend checking to see what may be causing the continued dysfunction and see if there is a way to address it. Perhaps some core training or a heel lift depending on what the cause is.
      I hope that answers your question. If not,perhaps I misunderstood, or you require further clarification. Either way, please let me know, and I will try to provide a better answer as this only addresses what I would consider the most likely of many possibilities.

    This is not really a reply, but a question…For over 2 months now I have been having shoulder/back pain. It is just under/below my left shoulder blade. I can’t think of what I did to cause it, but I do lift weights 4 days a week. It is not too bad of a pain, but it gets worse with any kind of straining or if I get in a position with my left arm over my head sleeping, etc. I have also noticed it hurts if I breathe very deeply. I can still exercise with no problems though. I am a non smoker, healthy 36 year old male-5’10 170 lbs. I have gone to my primary care doctor twice for this, they say muscle strain, tell me to take Aleve and send me on my way. It is not getting any better and I want to see a chiropractor. Do you feel this is something that a chiropractor could help? How would they treat this? Thanks.

    Hi,
    My Chiropractor is treating me for low back pain. I have a peripheral neuro condition that is more uncomfortable. My history of back problems stems over 30 yrs But now it feels I have reached the point of no return.
    My previous scans have shown degenerative discs. I feel my chiropractor is helping. I have 12 visits booked 4 0f which ive attended so far.
    I am taking Gabapentin just 100mgx2/day but hope to come off it one day.
    I have been advised not to exercise. Is this helping? I want to do normal day to day things but worry that I will cease up if I dont charge my energy batteries physically. Just walking doesnt help. Im thinking along the lines of using all my limbs to get the adrenaline just a bit more alive.

      Degeneration in a joint (the discs in your case) is usually helped by exercise, but you may want to be careful of the type of exercise. Compressing exercises like running could cause more harm, but swimming may be very beneficial. In your case it is likely that you will want more than 12 visits. The initial goal of care is to help you reach maximal improvement, but after that you want to maintain that level of health. It may not be 100% function, but if you can maintain 60% that’s much better than slowly deteriorating. You may want to consider regular treatment after the initial plan in addition to exercise and diet changes.
      I don’t know why exercise was discouraged, but if you can get the reason behind it I can give you a more direct reply.

    Hi I was wondering where I can ask questions? I have so much discomfort and bruised pain in my back after seeing my chiro. I’d love some assurance and advice if possible?

      This is a fine place to ask your questions, just be aware that a neither a diagnosis nor a prognosis can be provided online and without a physical exam. Discomfort and aching is a fairly common side effect of chiropractic adjustments, but should not last longer than a day or two. I would be happy to discuss it, but would also recommend you speaking with your chiropractor about your concerns. If he cannot aleviate your concerns then you should find a new doc anyway. If you just want a second opinion, then I would advise seeking out another local doc.
